TURNING 26: WHERE SHOULD I START?
There are many different situations in which you might find yourself needing to apply for an insurance plan. One situation that comes up for many people is turning 26-years-old. You have been covered under an insurance plan your entire life by your parents or guardians, and now that you are 26, you are no longer eligible to remain on their insurance plans. Where do you start?
Being removed from a parent or guardian's insurance plan triggers a Special Enrollment Period, a qualified life event for an individual or family to purchase health insurance outside of the annual ACA Open Enrollment Period. The Special Enrollment Period has a 60-day window before losing coverage and a 60-day window after the life event occurs.
If you're covered by a parent or guardian’s health insurance plan through the Marketplace, you can stay on their plan until coverage ends December 31, even if you turn 26 mid-year. As of January 1, you would then have 60 days to enroll in a new plan. If the plan is not through the Marketplace, coverage will end when you turn 26 or shortly after; check with the insurance plan for the exact date.
