accessing eating disorder treatment is a major hurdle for 96% of americans seeking care.

Significant financial, sociocultural, identification, and treatment quality barriers were reported in this critical study.

eating disorder treatment is incredibly difficult to access. Now there’s quantitative data to prove it.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Financial barriers (e.g., lack of insurance coverage) were the most frequent treatment access barrier reported by individuals with eating disorders.

  • Treatment access barriers disproportionally affected underrepresented groups (e.g., gender, racial-ethnic, and sexual minority groups) and individuals with a diagnosis of other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED).

  • Reports of greater barriers to treatment access were related to elevated eating disorder symptoms.
