Insurance Navigation 101

Eating Disorder Insurance Navigation 101

Insurance is confusing. Project HEAL’s Insurance Navigation Program helps individuals understand their often-confusing insurance benefits and patient rights, as well as advocate for treatment coverage.

Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Alexa Grayson. I’m the Insurance Navigation Program Manager at Project HEAL. Our insurance navigation program was designed to help break down healthcare barriers to eating disorder treatment.

There's a fundamental lack of knowledge of insurance and how that's used in eating disorder treatment, and that lack of knowledge is mostly from the insurance companies.

In our Insurance Navigation Program, we work on a 1 to 1 case management basis to work on navigating these barriers. This might include helping you switch insurance plans, enroll in a new insurance plan or for the first time, open enrollment through the ACA marketplace.

We help navigate unfair denials and premature discharges and appeals and work with your treatment team if necessary. We also help with single case agreements and overall, just education about your benefits and how to find them.

Our Insurance Navigation page includes self-led learning guides that you can go through to learn about everything related to eating disorders and the insurance landscape. We also have self-led guides included in Mandarin and Spanish.

For 1 to 1 case management and support, you can request this through our treatment placement application on our website or reach out directly to insurance@theprojectheal.org

The Summary of Benefits and Coverage is essentially a snapshot of a health plan's covered benefits and the cost that you may pay for those services. It is a patient's right to be given your SBC in easy-to-understand language when requested. You can find the SBC when you're enrolling in an insurance plan through the marketplace or an employer by a link or a downloadable PDF to compare when choosing between plans. If you already have insurance, you can ask a copy, ask for a copy from your insurance company or employer at any time. If you have an insurance portal, you can also find your SBC there.

Let's take a look at an example of a Summary of Benefits and Coverage and what that might look like. This is a sample graph that's taken off of the ACA Marketplace to give you an idea of the breakdown of the chart and what you might see when you're comparing plans. The SBC is also really helpful, especially on the marketplace, when you want to compare to other plans. And it's overwhelming because there are so many.
