Make a Difference Day: Project HEAL Marathon Q & A
On Saturday, October 25, 2014 Project HEAL will host an 8 hour live-stream event via Hangouts On Air (from 12pm-8pm EST).
The Hangouts On Air will feature 6 modules which will cover the following topics:
I. Understanding Eating Disorders (12:20pm to 1:20pm)
This first question and answer session will cover all of the basics about eating disorders, including diagnosis/symptoms, causes, treatment, and how to help a friend or family member you think may be suffering from an eating disorder.
II. Supporting a Loved One Struggling with an Eating Disorder (1:30pm to 2:50pm)
This session will cover what is involved with supporting a loved one struggling with an eating disorder, including understanding how to be helpful to your loved one recovering, discerning the difference between offering support and enabling behaviors, incorporating self-care for the caretaker, and any other questions for our family members, significant others, friends, and colleagues of individuals with eating disorders who are panelists in this session.
III. Eating Disorders and Body Image Struggles Among Males (3:00pm to 4:20pm)
This Q&A will include males who have recovered from an eating disorder, males who struggle with negative/poor body image, and professionals who have done research and/or worked with males seeking to overcome such struggles. Questions may include- possible symptoms of an eating disorder, causes of body image struggles and/or eating disorder, stigmas about males and eating disorders, how to support a friend or loved one, and treatment options.
IV. Dieting, Disordered Eating, and Eating Disorders Among Children and Adolescents (4:30pm to 5:50pm)
Q&A in this session will cover topics intended for parents, caretakers, medical/mental health professionals, older siblings/family members, teachers, and any other adults that interact with children and/or plan on having children in the future. Specific topics include- the problem with diets, societal/media influence on diet/body image, the influence parents/adult figures have on child/adolescent behavior, average percentage of children and adolescents who diet or display disordered eating behaviors and the correlation with developing an eating disorder (what are behavioral signs to look for and how to try and combat them), and how to initiate change in society.
V. Recognition and Treatment of Eating Disorders Internationally and Among Different Cultures (6:00pm to 6:50pm)
Q&A session will include panel members from various parts of the world to discuss the differences in culture and lifestyle and how they influence views on body image, dieting, and or eating disorders, what options for eating disorder treatment are available, and how to generate change.
VI. Eating Disorders and Body Image in the LGBT Community (7:00pm to 7:50pm)
This session will address the common experiences regarding body image and eating disorders among individuals within the LGBT community.
