The Sydney Australia Chapter of Project HEAL was founded in June 2014 by Nicole McDermid. Nicole knows first-hand what the depths of an eating disorder feel like. She had battled with an eating disorder for many years before truly embracing the idea that a complete recovery was possible. Through intensive treatment and support from her friends and family, Nicole has regained her life and is now dedicating her time to helping others who are now battling their own demons. Nicole is fiercely passionate about instilling hope in the lives of those affected by an eating disorder; she wholeheartedly believes that recovery takes time, but in the end, it is absolutely worth it.
Nicole has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling. She has worked in a community mental health setting as well as working with children and adults experiencing hardship, disability and mental health concerns. Nicole is currently completing her Masters Degree in Primary Education and is one day hoping to combine her love and passion for Social Work and Education by delivering early intervention and educational programs to school aged children, geared towards eating disorders, body image and embracing who you are.
A message from Nicole, “I know it’s hard, I really do. Nothing I say here will make everything instantly OK, but I want you to know that it gets better; it won’t always feel like this. There will come a time where you don’t feel so suffocated, a time where you can breathe a little easier, a time where recovery won’t seem so terrifying. I want you to know that you are never alone. Recovery is one of the most terrifying experiences of your life, but the only way out is through. You are worth so much more than your eating disorder and you have such a beautiful life waiting for you on the other side. Wake up each morning and make the decision to give recovery your all. Be brave. Be bold. Be YOU. You CAN do this.”
