Song: So Small by Carrie Underwood

What does this song mean to you? I was introduced to this song by one of my favorite Recovery Care Specialists in treatment for an eating disorder. I have a bad habit of making problems so much bigger than they are. This song reminds me to focus on the things that matter. When recovery is hard, this song reinforces that recovery is possible.

What’s your favorite lyric from the song?

“While you’re sitting around thinking about what you can’t change                                                                        And worrying about all the wrong things
Time’s flying by, moving so fast
You better make it count ’cause you can’t get it back.”

Song: You Gotta Be by Des’ree

What does this song mean to you? Someone very important to me recently sent me this song. To me this song means that whatever your future may seem to hold at the present, you can challenge, and thus change, that future by your actions in the present.

What’s your favorite lyric?

You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

Song: Jump Rope by Blue October

What does this song mean to you? Life can be tough but when things are most difficult, hold onto hope. There are ups and downs in life. When you’re down it can be difficult to remember what you’re fighting for. The road to recovery is not smooth or easy, but it does get easier.

What’s your favorite lyric?

I want to tell you that everything will be okay
That everything will eventually turn itself to gold
Keep pushin through it all
Don’t follow, lead the way
Don’t lose yourself or your hope
Remember life’s like a jump rope

Song: Third Eye by Florence & the Machine

What does this song mean to you? This song means a lot to me. It’s definitely one of my life anthems. One time when I was in therapy a was shutting down and I couldn’t respond very well, but my therapist took her scarf and gently placed it by me and said to reach out for it and hold onto it like a lifeline. I started bawling because one of the lines from this song says, “that original lifeline” and here she was giving me a literal lifeline. Whenever I think of that memory it still fills me up today and gives me courage to give that lifeline to myself when I need it.

The song also reminds me that I don’t need to shut myself out from the world. I used to always think the only thing that I was good at and was therefor the most comforting was being sick and staying depressed. But I’m allowed to be human and to have pain and to also feel loved and be held by those around me.

What’s your favorite lyric?

Hey, look up
You don’t have to be a ghost Hidden amongst the living
You are flesh and blood
And you deserve to be loved
And you deserve what you are given
